If you are a mom or a grandma you know that boo-boo’s happen with children and sometimes quite frequently. You may already know that I have two adorable grandsons, Tyler age 9 and Noah age 7. And I don’t know if it is because they are boys, but they seem to have boo-boo’s a lot. I actually don’t remember my girls having that many, but then again they didn’t play as rough either. Maybe girls are different today, I don’t know.

During the summer I stay with Tyler and Noah two days a week while mom and dad work. And I don’t know where the time has went so far. School will start again before you know it. We do things like go to the library, the store or to a movie. And we have a lot of FUN!

On Monday of this week the boys we playing around after lunch and all of a sudden a shriek of a scream came from Tyler and he came running holding his hand. His hand got slammed in the back door! I immediately looked at his hand to see if it was bleeding and then grabbed my “grandmas natural handbag” and pulled out the peppermint essential oil. I put 3 drops over his fingers, which is what actually got hurt. I smeared it around and told him to hold his hand out and not get it up around his eyes. Peppermint is a warm oil and so even the fumes can make the eyes burn somewhat. It won’t harm the eyes, as long as it is NOT perfume grade oils, but it’s uncomfortable.

Almost instantly he stopped screaming and said it was much better. About 5 minutes later, I did the same thing, but using 2 drops this time. We waited 5 minutes again and I ask Tyler how it felt and he said better. So for good measure, I then put a couple drops of the Young Living’s Panaway blend on it. I did that because along with the organic essential oils of helichrysum, clove and peppermint, it has wintergreen in it. Wintergreen is also a pain oil that contains methyl salicylate, a key ingredient of many sports balms. And although this was not a sports injury ( or who knows with kids, right) I knew it would help with any soreness that could develop. Needless to say after about 30 minutes or so, everything was back to normal. Whew!

Now you may be thinking…why did you put the essential oils on every 5 minutes? That’s because when you have an injury LOTS of inflammation develops immediately as a result. So to neutralize all that inflammation, you need to saturate the injured tissue. And every 5 minutes works miracles! How long should you do that? As long as there is pain. It may takes several applications before the pain STOPS. It depends on how bad the injury. And my goal is to stop the pain. And I may rotate oils as well depending on the injury.

Why Peppermint essential oil?

Peppermint essential oil is always in my “grandma’s natural handbag.” I don’t go anywhere without it. Why? Because these natural organic oils work so well and sooo fast!  And as you can see, it is good for pain. But I also have it for any tummy problems, including nausea that could arise. A drop applied to the soles of each foot usually does the trick. Other uses are to reduce fevers, sinus problems, allergies, and headaches.

Aside from these great essential oil uses, peppermint promotes a cooling and refreshing sensation because it contains menthol. For years menthol has been used in medicines, cosmetics, liniments, and in food and beverages.

More reasons for Panaway

One day about 4 years ago before the boys were in school I remember another bad boo-boo but this time it happened to Noah. They were playing inside the coat closet. Noah was in the closet and Tyler shut the door on Noah’s finger. Again loud screaming!  I looked to see the damage and his finger was white as snow but no blood, so I grabbed the Panaway and dropped a couple drops on the finger.  Immediately he stopped crying.  I did apply it a couple more times every 5 minutes to make sure.

Panaway is another essential oil I will not be without. I use it for all kinds of pain. The adults in my family even take it internal in capsules for pain, as we try never to take pain medication and it works very well. My caution to you about that is…NEVER take oils internal unless they are Young Living Essential Oils. You can harm yourself taking perfume grade oils! The reasons for that will be another article.

So if you have children or grandchildren, having these pure essential oils will save the day many times over.

Be Well,

Carol Wickett
